School-Based Services vs. Private Practice Services
The Speech Language Pathologists within the school system generally assesses for articulation or language delays. The School Psychologist can assess to see if there are any characteristics of dyslexia, which basically means that a student isn’t reading on grade level, and will usually be placed in small group for intervention. At Speechology, we can give a formal diagnosis of Dyslexia if a client qualifies, or determine what the underlying cause of the reading deficit is, if not Dyslexia. A plan of care specific to that client and their needs is then created based off of our evaluation. We also provide one-on-one treatment that focuses on phonological awareness, reading, and spelling. For this, we generally use an Orton Gillingham based program that targets both reading and spelling in a systematic, multisensory approach. We also use a program for clients who need a stronger foundation in phonological awareness initially.
